Course Description:

The evolution of the e-business model over the past several years has led organizations and their managers to reexamine strategies to compete in a global arena today. Issues related to combining/keeping separate electronic business operations from more traditional operations are often paramount. At the same time, businesses are also investigating issues related to protecting their name, logos, information content, and other business assets involving intellectual property, which includes patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The problem is exacerbated because organizations do business virtually/globally but can encounter differences in laws related to intellectual property. For example, there are major differences related to software patents between the US and the EU. This course will provide the student with information about various forms of intellectual property today as they relate to and impact e-business. International aspects, i.e., US versus EU differences, will be examined.

Course Objektives:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be aware of:

  • The nature of doing e-business today
  • The different forms of intellectual property, especially as they relate to e-business
  • Strategies businesses follow regarding use and protection of their intellectual property assets
  • Differences that exist today between how the US and EU treat various forms of intellectual property
  • Issues involving jurisdiction, i.e., what jurisdictions (US, EU, other) are relevant with regard to legal challenges involving e-business
